Logitech PRO X 2 on Mac : The wireless promise that was never kept
There is a whole category of products the industry has decided are “solved,” and which it can therefore keep selling at a premium without ever looking at them again. The wireless gaming headset belongs to that category. For ten years now we have been told that proprietary 2.4 GHz killed latency, that the connection is “lossless,” that the battery lasts for days, and that all of it works, to quote the implicit promise of every spec sheet, “just like that.” At nearly 300 dollars, you are entitled to expect the one core function, staying connected, to be guaranteed. Spoiler: it is not, and we are already halfway through the decade.
My case in point is a Logitech PRO X 2, plugged in through its Lightspeed dongle on an Apple Silicon Mac mini. Two years of use, two years of intermittent torment whose sheer absurdity I never took the time to measure until I went and checked whether I was alone. I am not. And that is precisely what turns a personal anecdote into something worth writing about.
The Scenario, Always the Same
The disconnection gives no warning. No telltale crackle, no warning beep, no notification. The sound stops dead, in total silence, as if a wire had been cut. Sometimes turning the headset off and back on does the trick. Most of the time, it does not. Then you have to physically unplug the dongle, plug it back in, wait, and cross your fingers.
The most telling part is not the cutout itself, it is the contagion. When the headset drops, it is not only the audio that dies, it is the entire sound subsystem of the machine that starts spinning its wheels. A YouTube video stops loading, the browser hangs, clearly waiting on an audio output device that has vanished without leaving a forwarding address. The system is chasing a ghost. And the detail that confirms the diagnosis: at the exact moment I unplug the dongle, the stalled video suddenly resumes, the sound bursts out for a fraction of a second through the Mac mini’s built-in speaker, just long enough for macOS to fall back to the default output, before I plug the dongle back in and the cycle starts over. In other words, the bug in a 300-dollar peripheral takes the entire computer hostage.
I did what you are supposed to do. Change ports. Route it through a USB-A 2.0 adapter, supposedly to keep the receiver away from the interference-prone USB 3 ports. Nothing changes. And it is by digging deeper that the true nature of the problem reveals itself.
First Culprit: Logitech’s Proprietary Wireless
The Lightspeed receiver is not exclusive to the PRO X 2. It is the same 2.4 GHz block found across much of the lineup, a chaos of in-house protocols I have already dissected elsewhere, and the list of products that drop their connection in forums is staggering. A G Pro Wireless mouse that disconnects and reconnects every few minutes. The G305, G435, G603, the MK235 keyboard-and-mouse combos, all in the same boat, all tethered to that infamous little dongle. The symptom is invariable: a cutout of two or three seconds, sometimes permanent, with no apparent cause.
The official doctrine of support pages and forums comes down to a handful of remedies that every owner of wireless gear knows by heart: check the port, switch ports, plug into the front of the case rather than the back to limit interference, disable USB selective suspend on Windows, update the firmware, restart. On one thread devoted to these dropouts, a user soberly recounts having tried turning it off and on, switching USB ports, tweaking the settings to stop the ports from sleeping, and rebooting, all to no avail. You recognize the ritual of despair, that list of gestures you repeat while knowing full well that not one of them addresses the cause.
Because the cause, with 2.4 GHz wireless, is often physical and hard to work around: the band is congested. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microwave ovens, and above all, cruel irony, the USB 3.0 ports themselves, whose electromagnetic emissions are a well-known jammer of wireless receivers. That is why a short extension cable that moves the dongle away from the machine sometimes works where everything else has failed. But that explanation, valid for plenty of Windows cases, is not enough to account for mine. Because my problem has a second dimension, and it sits on Apple’s side of the fence.
Second Culprit: The macOS USB Audio Stack
If Logitech supplies the temperamental wireless, Apple supplies the soil it rots in. But let us be precise, because this is where the nuance matters. macOS actually handles so-called Class Compliant audio very well, meaning devices that stick to the USB audio standard without a house driver. Plug in a serious audio interface or a standards-respecting DAC, and everything runs smoothly. The house of cards only collapses the moment a manufacturer layers its own software on top of the system. And that is exactly what Logitech does with its bloated G Hub, whose reputation on the Mac speaks for itself.
The history of macOS troubles with third-party USB audio forms an unbroken line of discontent that runs across every version of the system. That the system has grown unstable to the point where you have to beg Apple to fix it no longer needs proving. As far back as 2017, owners of USB headsets were finding, after an update, a sound that wavered, stuttered, and cut out several times a second, while the internal speaker and the headphone jack worked perfectly. The diagnosis offered by a user back then still holds today: the common denominator is USB, something broke in the driver stack. The home remedy, as if by chance, was to route the signal through an old unpowered USB hub placed between the headset and the machine. You find the same workaround, year after year, like an anthropological constant that carries on to this day.
The phenomenon continues with a particularly familiar variant: the audio-output-switching bug. Plug in a USB speaker or headset, pause playback for a while, switch from one output to another, and nothing comes out until you unplug and replug the cable. This is, word for word, what I experience when the sound jumps briefly to the Mac mini’s speaker before vanishing. The system loses track of its own peripherals.
And if anyone still doubted that the software layer is the weak link, the year 2026 offered a spectacular demonstration. In January, Logitech let the signing certificate for its G Hub and Logi Options+ apps expire. The result: both pieces of software simply stopped launching, stuck on a spinning wheel, overnight depriving users of their macros, their scroll-wheel settings, and their sensitivity tuning. The kicker: the problem affected macOS only, Windows users were untouched. Cornered, the company eventually acknowledged publicly, on Reddit, that it was an inexcusable mistake. A forgotten certificate, and an entire hardware ecosystem goes down, on a single platform. Proof by absurdity that the fragility comes not from the audio standard, but from everything the manufacturer piles on top of it.
The most recent layer of the problem, the one that affects me directly, comes to sit atop this shaky edifice: Apple Silicon seems to make things worse. Multiple accounts converge on the idea that the house chips handle wireless and USB less well than the old Intel Macs. One of them, weary, frames the paradox that sums it all up: the only wireless peripherals that have always worked flawlessly across years of Mac use are Apple’s own devices, with everything else a matter of luck. On a Mac mini M2, the same kind of combo billed as “optimized for Mac” loses its connection. The loop is closed: fragile third-party hardware, fragile software layer, fragile host system, and caught between all three, the user who unplugs his dongle twenty times a day.
Telling, as to how seriously the matter is being followed up: Logitech’s own support page for wireless troubleshooting on macOS now carries notes along the lines of “if you are on an Apple Silicon Mac, skip this step, the advanced options are no longer available.” Translation: the official documentation has not kept pace with the system’s evolution, and the user is left to navigate blindly through half-obsolete instructions.
The Real Scandal: The Silence and the Outsourcing of the Problem
What makes me angriest is not the technology. Radio frequency is a difficult field, coexistence in the 2.4 GHz band is a genuine headache, I will grant that. What is unacceptable is the commercial posture.
On one side, Logitech sells a 300-dollar product while promising a seamless experience, and points the user toward a list of magic gestures when it does not work. On the other, Apple cashes in the reputation of an ecosystem that “just works” while letting a USB audio bug fester for the better part of a decade, in that slow twilight where power users have become an adjustment variable. On the adjacent subject of wireless peripherals dropping en masse on Mac, one exasperated user noted how telling it was that months had passed since the initial report without so much as a statement or the faintest hint of a fix on the way. Silence as a method.
Caught between the two, it is the customer who becomes the unpaid maintenance engineer. It is he who buys an extension cable to move the dongle away, he who tests five ports, he who combs the forums for an incantation, he who ends up unplugging and replugging like someone smacking a 1980s television set. Quality control has been outsourced to the buyer, and they call it innovation.
There is a broader symptom of the age at work here. Complexity piles up, each player optimizes its own layer with no regard for the whole, and responsibility dissolves down the chain. Logitech blames the radio environment, Apple blames no one and says nothing, and the finished product, the one that was supposed to “just work,” does not. The promise of mature, reliable, transparent wireless belongs, here in the middle of the decade, to marketing, not to lived experience.
Update: The Bluetooth Fallback, an Imperfect Workaround
An honest clarification is in order, because the PRO X 2 is not condemned to the dongle alone. The headset is in fact tri-mode: Lightspeed 2.4 GHz, a 3.5 mm jack, and Bluetooth. And many users facing the same disconnections end up abandoning Lightspeed to switch over to Bluetooth, where the connection generally proves more stable. The logic holds: over Bluetooth, you lean on the native system stack rather than on the proprietary receiver and its driver, so you remove precisely the link that causes the trouble.
But this fallback comes at a cost, and it has to be named so as not to sell a false solution. The PRO X 2’s Bluetooth latency sits around 200 to 250 milliseconds, perfectly acceptable for video, music, or video calls, but plainly bothersome for twitchy gaming, where the slightest lag between picture and sound makes itself felt. On the quality side, the headset is limited to the AAC and SBC codecs, with no aptX, which caps the output relative to what Lightspeed delivers. Another significant limitation: there is no multipoint and no simultaneous listening. You can pair over Bluetooth while keeping the dongle connected, but only to switch between the two, not to receive both sources at once.
In other words, Bluetooth is a workaround, not a redemption. You trade a reliability flaw for a deficit in latency and quality, which amounts to paying for a high-end headset only to run it in a lower gear. For desktop listening on a Mac, for content and video calls, it is a defensible compromise and probably the wisest course if the Lightspeed dropouts are driving you mad. For anyone who bought this headset precisely for its low-latency wireless, it is a confession of failure dressed up as a feature.
I do have to be transparent, though: as I write these lines, I have not yet put Bluetooth mode through a long-term test on my own Apple Silicon Mac mini. It is entirely possible that the macOS Bluetooth stack, whose quirks are themselves well documented, reintroduces its own disconnections through another door. I will update this article once I have enough perspective to say whether the Bluetooth fallback genuinely goes the distance, or whether it merely relocates the problem. As things stand, treat it as a lead worth trying, not as a guarantee.
My Verdict, No Hedging
I will not be doing this again. Not this product, and probably not any gaming headset that relies on a proprietary 2.4 GHz dongle plugged into a Mac. Not because Logitech is incapable of making good hardware, its wired products and some of its peripherals are excellent, even if I have not spared the shortcomings of its MX Keys S keyboard either, but because the sum of two fragilities, the in-house wireless and the macOS USB stack, produces a result unworthy of the price.
The lesson I draw from it is sober and a little disenchanted. When a critical function depends on perfect harmony between two suppliers who do not talk to each other, you have to remove a link. In practice, that means going back to wired for anyone who wants absolute reliability, or choosing a headset whose connection does not pass through a proprietary dongle perched on the most unstable audio stack on the market. Two other paths remain, and this is where the cynicism of the ecosystem comes into full view. Modern Bluetooth, with its recent codecs, often works better than these house dongles, provided you accept its own compromises in latency and quality. But above all, there is Apple’s proprietary protocol, the famous H1 and then H2 chip in the AirPods and Beats, which delivers instant pairing, automatic switching between devices, and a stability nothing else matches on a Mac. And that stability, Apple jealously reserves for its own products. The implicit message is unmistakable: you want it to truly work, without unplugging a dongle every hour? Buy AirPods Max or Beats. You could not push a user toward the company store more effectively than by leaving the rest of the ecosystem to fend for itself in instability. On the scale of a headset, this is the same logic of enclosure that turns our devices into a pocket-sized dictatorship.
To those living the same nightmare, I have no miracle cure to offer, because there is none. What I do have is a now-documented certainty: you are not at fault, you are not alone, and your exasperation is entirely justified. It is not your setup that is misconfigured, it is a product, and a system, that fail to keep their promises. At 300 dollars, that is called a disappointment. On the scale of the industry, it is called a habit.
The most revealing part is the effect this misadventure has had on my own buying intentions. I had been eyeing the Astro A50 X for a while, that flagship at nearly 400 dollars with its base station and HDMI switcher. Well, they will not catch me with it. Because the A50 X is also a Logitech G product, built on exactly the same Lightspeed technology as my PRO X 2, driven by the same G Hub, the very one that stopped launching on the Mac in January. Paying double to take the same poison in a fancier bottle, no thank you. Some buyers, in fact, are already reporting serious software problems and flaky Bluetooth on this model, which only confirms the diagnosis.
The mistrust has gone further than audio alone. For months now I have been dragging my feet over replacing my MX Master 3S mouse with the MX Master 4, even though an upgrade like that normally costs me no hesitation whatsoever. That tells you how much the experience has eaten into my confidence in the brand’s wireless ecosystem. When a manufacturer makes you doubt not only the product that let you down, but every product you were planning to buy next, it is no longer an isolated incident, it is a reputation beginning to crack. And that is, in all likelihood, the most lasting consequence of this whole affair.
