Has Apple finally fixed the macOS SMB Disaster?

On June 22, 2026, I received a notification from Apple Feedback Assistant that legitimately made me raise both eyebrows.

“As a result of your feedback, there are changes in the latest beta, macOS 27 Golden Gate (build 26A5368g), that have resolved this issue. Has this issue been resolved after installing the latest update?”

The ticket in question? FB13802619, which I opened on May 18, 2024, under the remarkably diplomatic title: SMB protocol implementation is a disaster

Let me be completely honest: I submitted this ticket with zero expectation of a response, even two years down the line. I was used to it. As power users, we file a report, vent on forums, tweak /private/etc/nsmb.conf, and move on while waiting for the next major release that promises to fix everything.

Apparently, this time, someone actually read it.

My exact feedback from may 2024

Here is what I wrote back then, word for word:

On MacOS X, the SMB protocol is a horror… despite all the modifications I’ve tried over the months. Editing nsmb.conf improves things, but doesn’t make protocol implementation miraculous.

I’m having more and more trouble with this operating system and its (many) problems, which are never solved with each update… which offer things that most users don’t give a damn about.

Apple’s hardware has never been better, and at the same time, their operating system has never been worse.

Most users fall back on the (old and obsolete) AFP protocol, which offers at least halfway acceptable performance.

Is anyone still working on this operating system, or am I going to have to implement a proper SMB client myself?

The tone was, shall we say, direct. And I clearly was not alone.

Two years later: macOS 27 Golden Gate

The notification specifies build 26A5368g, which corresponds to beta 2 of macOS 27 Golden Gate, released on June 22, 2026.

Among the announced features for this release, Apple highlights network performance enhancements, including “faster network file browsing” for Windows shares and NAS devices. This is the first time in a very long while that Apple seems to publicly acknowledge the issue even exists.

There is also a crucial detail to consider: macOS 27 Golden Gate completely removes the AFP client. After years of maintaining legacy compatibility, it is officially dead. Everyone is now forced to use SMB. In this context, a genuine protocol fix becomes downright critical.

What I have been saying in previous articles

This is hardly the first time I have sounded the alarm on this blog:

In those posts, I explained that ever since the forced migration to SMB and the gradual phasing out of AFP, users have been plagued by:

  • Random disconnections
  • Absurd slowdowns on large volumes or directories with thousands of files
  • Finder freezing or lagging
  • Spotlight failing to properly index network shares
  • The ongoing necessity of managing a /private/etc/nsmb.conf file packed with obscure, poorly documented parameters

The tweaks I usually recommend used to help, but they should not be necessary on a modern operating system in 2026.

Where I stand right now

I remain cautiously optimistic, but history has taught me to be wary.

Apple claims the issue is resolved in this beta, which is already a step up from their usual silence. However, several questions remain:

  • Is this a deep, structural fix, or just a marginal improvement that will break again in two releases?
  • Does it work reliably across heterogeneous hardware like Synology, QNAP, TrueNAS, and Windows Server?
  • Will power users finally be able to delete their nsmb.conf without breaking their workflow?

I have not yet tested the beta under heavy SMB workloads, but I will be evaluating the following very soon:

  1. Repeatedly mounting and unmounting shares
  2. Transferring massive single files alongside thousands of tiny ones
  3. Performance over several hours of intensive continuous work
  4. Stability following system sleep and wake cycles
  5. Side-by-side comparisons with and without my legacy nsmb.conf tweaks
  6. Spotlight indexing behavior on network shares, if applicable
  7. Time Machine performance over NAS, especially now that AFP is entirely gone

A note to Apple, should anyone be reading

Thank you for addressing this ticket, even if it took two years.

That said, real validation will not come from a Feedback Assistant notification. It will come from the thousands of professionals who rely on network shares daily and are tired of using duct-tape configurations just to achieve basic functionality.

The hardware is outstanding. The operating system needs to finally match that standard on the features that actually matter to power users.
