France’s 2025 Budget: Is Mortgaging the Future Still Acceptable?

Every year, the same script plays out: the government presents a draft budget, lawmakers debate it, and the specter of article 49.3 hangs over the proceedings. For 2025, nothing has changed. This budget, marked by a glaring gap between revenue and spending, may well be imposed on the national assembly, despite fierce opposition from parties ready to vote a motion of no confidence.

Beyond the political maneuvering, though, an essential question remains: how can an unbalanced budget still be passed in a country whose public debt exceeds 3 trillion euros? That works out to nearly 45,000 euros per inhabitant, a burden our children will carry without ever having been asked.

An irresponsible act with lasting consequences

A public budget ought to reflect a balance between available resources and the needs of the nation. Yet for decades, successive governments have taken the easy road: funding current expenditure through borrowing. Every euro spent beyond revenue is not merely a technical problem, it is a moral mortgage on the future.

These choices are not neutral. Tomorrow, our children and grandchildren will pay this debt down: fewer public services, higher taxes, and a nation weakened economically. This budgetary imbalance is anything but trivial. It is a genuine betrayal of the generations to come.

The sacrifices a balanced budget requires

It is high time we acknowledged that keeping a budget balanced will require sacrifices, and that those sacrifices have to be faced head-on. This is not about squeezing the most vulnerable or finding easy savings in essential services. It is about reordering priorities and admitting past mistakes. Superfluous spending and ineffective subsidies all need to be reexamined seriously and courageously. No sacrifice should be off the table if we want to leave our children a viable future.

Plenty of officials, no accountability

In the corporate world, an executive who drove his company into bankruptcy would face legal action for mismanagement. Why do we tolerate such impunity in politics? Elected officials who vote for deficit budgets with no credible plan for recovery ought to be held accountable.

Serious measures are needed to make accountability real:

  • Full transparency about the long-term economic consequences.
  • Stronger political accountability, with penalties ranging from disqualification from office to the loss of the perks that come with it.
  • Strict budgetary rules, making any unbalanced budget illegal except in a major national crisis.

Article 49.3: symptom of an ailing democracy

Routinely invoking article 49.3 to push through budgets that command no consensus is a negation of democratic debate. Rather than building agreement around workable solutions, the government prefers to impose its choices. The practice does nothing but feed distrust of our institutions and widen the gulf between citizens and their representatives.

An urgent call to action

The 2025 budget, as presented, should not be adopted. Cutting wasteful spending, investing in sectors with real prospects, and establishing a credible debt-reduction strategy are imperatives.

Above all, it is time to rethink our model of political accountability. Future generations deserve better than empty promises and disastrous bookkeeping. We owe them a state that is stable, prosperous, and capable of looking ahead. It falls to us, as citizens, to make our voices heard and demand an accounting.

A fight without illusions, but a necessary one

However heavy the task ahead, we cannot give in to fatalism. The 2025 budget and the reckless handling of the debt are symptoms of an economic system in crisis, aggravated by the European Union’s ever more pronounced influence.

The submission of our elites to Brussels considerably complicates any attempt at a genuinely sovereign recovery. Discouraging as that reality is, it must not stop us from demanding change.

We still have the chance to throw off the European yoke and give France back control of its destiny, but that will take a massive and determined mobilization, one that relentlessly calls out the political maneuvering that would sacrifice our children on the altar of debt. This fight is a hard one, but it is far from lost as long as we refuse to look away.
