My iPhone is afraid of the sun

There is an irony here I find almost delicious, and it is the only delicious thing in this whole affair. The moment my phone becomes unreadable is precisely the one Apple has spent ten years selling me: bright sunlight.

Bright sunlight, then. You pull out the device to read a map, frame a photo, glance at a message. And the screen begins to melt. Not the image: the light. Within a few dozen seconds, those famous nits we hear about at every keynote evaporate, and all that remains is a grayish rectangle you tilt this way and that in the hope of making something out. You end up shading it with your hand, like our grandparents in front of a television set placed too close to the window.

It is 2026. And I find it rather extraordinary that we are still dragging this kind of misery around.

What Is Actually Going On

Let us be precise, because the devil hides in the details and the official messaging is only too glad to leave him there. What we are seeing is not a failure of the brightness sensor. Quite the opposite. In the sun, the sensor does its job: it calls for the maximum, it switches on high brightness mode, it pushes the OLED panel toward its catalog peaks. The trouble is that, at that very instant, another mechanism is standing watch, and that one wants nothing to do with those peaks.

It is thermal management. As soon as the internal temperature climbs, iOS progressively lowers the maximum allowable brightness to protect the battery and preserve the panel. Nothing absurd about the principle: an OLED driven flat out heats up, ages, and nobody wants a screen scarred after two summers. Except that the sun piles on two assaults rather than one. It heats the device from the outside (that handsome sheet of black glass is a nearly perfect solar collector, soaking up radiation right above the very component it is supposed to illuminate), and at the same time it forces the panel to burn energy just to stay visible.

Two forces colliding. Peak demand meets peak thermal load. And it is always the same one that wins: the screen goes half dark at the exact moment you need it at full power. A mechanism almost perfect in its perversity.

Why My Old iPhones Never Knew This Grief

Because they had nowhere to fall from.

An early iPhone topped out at two hundred nits, then five hundred. It was already barely legible outdoors, but it did not dim: it had never shone to begin with. You do not notice a drop when you have stayed on the ground floor. Recent models climb to a thousand nits in everyday use, two thousand at peak, sometimes more. The promise is real, the ascent is dizzying, and the fall is all the more brutal for it. Going from two thousand to six hundred nits under a sheet of sunlight is something you notice. You notice it very clearly indeed.

There is also a reason of substance, not merely of altitude. Those old screens were LCDs: a panel lit from behind, indifferent to burn-in, one that took ambient heat in stride without ever threatening to keep the ghostly imprint of an icon for all eternity. The OLED, by contrast, is a marvel indoors (absolute blacks, brazen contrast, fineness of line) but it is organic matter, and organic matter dreads heat. It ages faster when it warms, it marks, it tires. The very panel that flatters the eye in a dimly lit living room is precisely the one you have to coddle the moment you expose it to the elements. Dimming in the sun, then, is not only the price of the nits: it is also the price of the technology that produces them.

In other words, the dimming is not a bug that turned up by accident. It is the bill for the nits race, doubled by the bill for going all-OLED. They sold us the height and the beauty without ever selling us the guarantee of holding on to them outdoors.

The Aerospace Prose Changes Nothing

I can already hear the objection; in fact I anticipated it. They will tell me about the laser-welded vapor chamber, built into a unibody chassis of aerospace-grade aluminum, far more effective than the titanium of earlier generations. Splendid. It is probably true. And it changes nothing about my problem.

Because here is the argument that settles the matter: I have exactly the same experience on an iPhone 13 Pro and on an iPhone 17 Pro. Four years apart. Four years of thermal innovations trumpeted every September. Titanium, then its abandonment, then the vapor chamber unveiled as the cooling revolution. And in the end, right in front of me, in my hand, in the blazing sun, the same rectangle fading out.

This is no accident. Those gains in heat dissipation are real enough, but they are not spent where I want them. They go toward sustaining processor power under load, toward holding the pace through a video, toward charging faster without cooking the battery. They serve the benchmark numbers. They do not serve the walker who simply wants to read his screen in the midday sun. The cooling improves; the software trade-off, however, never budges. At the slightest warming, brightness is the first thing sacrificed, because it is the easiest variable to cut and the least awkward to admit to.

And let there be no misunderstanding: if I am taking aim at Cupertino, it is because Apple is the undisputed king of aerospace prose, not because it is the only one to blame. Take a Samsung or a Pixel out under the same sun and you will witness the same surrender. The entire industry has fallen in line behind benchmark figures rather than real life. Apple simply wraps them more beautifully.

What I Am Paying For, Exactly

And this is where I move from annoyance to something more serious. They sell me a peak brightness figure as a headline selling point, invariably illustrated with a sunlit outdoor scene: a beach, a trail, a terrace. Then, in that precise situation, the device takes back the very feature I partly chose it for. The number on the slide is a laboratory number, measured across a few percent of the panel, for a few seconds, under conditions I will never meet on a ridge in the Vercors at noon.

I am not asking for the impossible. Physics is physics, and I would still take a throttled screen over a swelling battery. What I am asking for is honesty. That they stop selling a full-sun promise the phone is programmed to renege on the moment it gets warm. That they quote me a sustained, sustainable brightness rather than a theatrical peak. That they offer me, why not, an avowed setting: yes, I want full brightness right now, even if it nibbles at longevity, it is my device and it is my choice.

Instead, the surrender gets wrapped up for me in engineer’s prose: laser, unibody, aerospace alloy. A great deal of vocabulary for a single, very down-to-earth reality. In the sun, my iPhone is afraid, and it lowers its eyes.

It is 2026. That tells you everything.
